The first reactions to 'Venom' are in, and people are saying it's an unintentionally funny superhero movie with a bizarre Tom Hardy performance

The first reactions to 'Venom' are in, and people are saying it's an unintentionally funny superhero movie with a bizarre Tom Hardy performance· The first social-media reactions to "Venom" are in after the movie's world premiere on Monday.
· They paint a mixed picture, with some saying it's a "complete failure" and others enjoying its surprising humor.
· One thing everyone seems to agree on, though, is that Tom Hardy gives a bizarre performance.

"Venom," the latest superhero movie based on the popular Spider-Man villain, is either an entertaining buddy-cop movie or as bad as "Catwoman," depending on who you ask.

The frst social-media reactions to the movie poured in Monday night after the film's world premiere, and they paint a mixed picture. One thing everyone seems to agree on, however, is that, compared to his co-stars, Tom Hardy gives a bizarre performance as Eddie Brock, the reporter who is consumed by the alien symbiote called Venom.

Some critics despised the movie, calling it a "complete failure" and a "tonal mess." Others actually liked it a lot, saying it's surprisingly funny (maybe without intending to be) and to not take it too seriously.

Below are some early reactions to the movie:

*Many straight-up hated "Venom."*

#Venom is Catwoman level bad, with Tom Hardy's worst performance since This Means War.
DON'T SEE THE MOVIE!

— Daniel R (@DanielRPK) October 2, 2018

I'd rather watch Fant4stic on repeat than this. #Venom

— Daniel R (@DanielRPK) October 2, 2018

Like a turd.

In the wind.#Venom

— Jeremy Conrad (@ManaByte) October 2, 2018

Sorry to say that #Venom is pretty much a complete failure - a tonal mess that feels 15 years old, ignoring the storytelling strides that the superhero genre has made in recent years.

A few fun Venom-centric moments aside, it has nearly nothing to offer. Don't get your hopes up.

— Tom Horrorgensen (@Tom_Jorgensen) October 2, 2018

*Some people were confused, or even fascinated, by Tom Hardy's bizarre performance.*

The whole movie is Venom telling Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock over and over “I’m hungry, Eddie. I want to eat a brian, Eddie. You’re a loser, Eddie. You’re a pussy, Eddie.”

— Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) October 2, 2018

Tom Hardy's performance in #Venom is either Johnny Depp in the first PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN or Chris Klein in STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI. Either way, it's not boring.

— Scott Mendelson (@ScottMendelson) October 2, 2018

*Some had purely mixed feelings.*

It's...not a complete disaster? At least I was never mad watching it? But it is an excruciatingly surreal experience. The humor, the story beats, everything right down to the Eminem theme song feels like it emerged Kimmy Schmidt style from a sealed off early 00s bunker.

— The Mothmeg 🔜 NYCC (@rustypolished) October 2, 2018

Anyway, your mileage is really, really going to vary on this one. There are genuinely some echos of clever ideas but...man. If there's one superhero franchise that's having a killer couple years, it's Spider-Man. No matter how you slice it, Venom is a major non sequitur.

— The Mothmeg 🔜 NYCC (@rustypolished) October 2, 2018

*There were still plenty who liked it.*

Comic fans will like #Venom, as it pulls directly from the comics in many places. Tater tot fans will also like Venom. It’s certainly clunky & not as fluid as some recent Marvel movies, but it’s funny, intentional or not. Don’t take it too seriously, and stay through the credits pic.twitter.com/Llzvtv0fLL

— Erik Davis (@ErikDavis) October 2, 2018

#Venom was surprisingly funny! I had a freaking great time watching it. Despite some problems, it did right by its main character, Eddie Brock/Venom. People forget that he's always had a weird sense of humor in the comics, and that humor is fully on display in the movie! pic.twitter.com/20ufNrbGU4

— Hector Navarro (@Hectorisfunny) October 2, 2018

#Venom wasn’t as bad as everyone was saying it was going to be. Tom Hardy is and always will be a great actor, and I laughed a lot — but I’m not sure whether that was intentional or not. Post-credit scene is 🔥

— Beatrice Verhoeven (@bverhoev) October 2, 2018

Significant chunks of #Venom don’t work *at all* but there is some serious charm to the Eddie/Venom relationship. Not sure I had the intended reactions to some scenes but fun is fun - even when it’s totally ridiculous, right? It’s too bad they didn’t go for the R rating though.

— Perri Nemiroff (@PNemiroff) October 2, 2018

#Venom is like a buddy comedy in which one of the buddies has to prevent the other from biting people’s heads off, which is another way of saying I liked it.

— Michael Nordine (@slowbeard) October 2, 2018

*And it's at least better than "The Emoji Movie."*

Venom. Venom is better

— Johnny Rotten (@jacksfilms) October 2, 2018

"Venom" comes to theaters on Friday.

Japan Open: Marin Cilic suffers shock defeat to Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff

Top seed Marin Cilic crashed out of the Japan Open in a shock 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 defeat to Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round on Tuesday.

The former US Open champion looked to be in complete control after pocketing the first set with a brutal drive volley, but things quickly unravelled for the Croatian when Struff suddenly caught fire.

All the feels, @Struffitennis

Jan-Lennard Struff engineers his 2nd career Top-10 win, upsetting Marin Cilic 3-6 6-4 7-6(1) in Tokyo.#rakutenopen pic.twitter.com/RsgF19p4wO

— Tennis TV (@TennisTV) October 2, 2018

After Struff, ranked a whopping 50 places below Cilic at 56 in the world, had levelled the match, normal service appeared to have resumed in the deciding set.

Cilic, who reached the final of this year's Australian Open, broke for 3-2 with a peach of a backhand that dipped viciously onto Struff's toes, but the German struck back -- not once, but twice -- to force a tiebreak.

Struff smashed the breaker, snaffling it 7-1 with his ninth ace to complete a stunning turnaround after two hours, 18 minutes.

He next plays Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who edged a war of attrition with Bosnian Damir Dzumhur 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the last 16.

Fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas avoided a similar fate to Cilic as the Greek thrashed Japan's Taro Daniel 6-1, 6-3 in the late match.

Earlier, three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka beat Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4 while eighth seed Richard Gasquet also advanced, the Frenchman ousting another American, Denis Kudla, 7-6, 6-3.

Frances Tiafoe restored some pride for the United States by beating Germany's Maximilian Marterer 7-5, 6-4.

Cilic's demise will boost Kei Nishikori's hopes of winning a third Japan Open crown after the local favourite won the tournament in 2012 and 2014.

NMS vs Eric Samek and Marc Davidson AEW

NMS vs Eric Samek and Marc Davidson AEW *SANTA MONICA, CA / ACCESSWIRE / October 2, 2018 / NMS Properties, Inc.*

*NMS Files Amended Complaint Alleging Fraud by AEW Capital and its Executives Eric Samek and Marc Davidson After Winning on Appeal*

*Massive East Coast Hedge Fund Allegedly Defrauded Local Family Real Estate Business with False Promises*

Neil Shekhter and his affiliated companies filed their amended complaint for fraud against the multi-billion dollar, Boston-based hedge fund, AEW Capital, as well as its former executive, Eric Samek, and its current Managing Director, Marc Davidson. The complaint alleges that AEW's executives fraudulently induced Shekhter to transfer five valuable properties in prime Los Angeles areas into a joint venture with AEW at significantly below fair market value.

This new lawsuit comes after Shekhter won on appeal. The Court of Appeal reversed the prior dismissal of the case on demurrer by Judge Suzanne G. Bruguera, holding that Shekhter and the other plaintiffs can go to trial against AEW on their fraud claim. Specifically, the Court of Appeal ruled that "during negotiations, AEW knowing [sic] made false representations about the joint venture program, including that there was a monetization right and that Shekhter's transfer of his properties to the joint venture at below fair market value would be 'of no moment' because of his right to 'take-out' AEW within a few years."

According to the amended complaint, AEW promised Shekhter that he would have the right to take out, or buy out, AEW's interest in the joint venture within 5 years by paying AEW a 24% annual return on its investment. Relying on those promises, Shekhter and his entities transferred five valuable properties into the venture for over $50 million below market value; contributed over $10 million into the venture; and developed the properties without charging a developer's fee.

As agreed, Shekhter tried to exercise the take-out right in 2013 by paying AEW $106 million which constituted AEW's investment along with the 24% annual return. By then, the properties had significantly appreciated in value - so AEW went back on its word, denied the take-out right and decided to hold onto the properties for themselves.

As detailed in the complaint, AEW's fraud have been confirmed by numerous independent third-party witness. One of those witnesses is a former AEW employee, Daniel Lennon, who worked directly for Samek at AEW on the deal. Lennon, a decorated Navy fighter pilot and a graduate of the Wharton School, submitted a "smoking gun" sworn declaration in which he revealed AEW's fraud: "During a conversation I had with Samek, Samek told me that although Shekhter believed he could monetize or take-out AEW's interest in the joint venture, AEW did not intend to allow that to happen."

According to Skip Miller of the firm Miller Barondess, LLP, Shekhter's lawyer: "We will prove, and we have the evidence to prove, in our lawsuit that AEW defrauded NMS, a local, family-owned real estate developer, by making promises that it never intended to keep. We look forward to our day in court before a California jury."

The complaint asks the Court to rescind the transfer of the five properties or, alternatively, damages in excess of $300 million which is the current market value of the properties.

Ocean Bank and Homeland Security Investigations Miami (HSI) Hold Presentation On Anti Money Laundering “Red Flags” on Venezuelan Public Corruption

Miami, Oct. 02, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Ocean Bank hosted a presentation by officials from Homeland Security Investigations Miami (HSI) on the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) Advisory on Public Corruption in Venezuela, highlighting steps financial institutions can take to avoid falling prey of money laundering red flags and prevent proceeds from Venezuelan public corruption from moving through the U.S. financial system.

The presentation by John Tobon, Deputy Special Agent in Charge for HSI, included how Venezuelan officials and Venezuelan state-owned entities attempt to manipulate the system through seemingly legitimate contracts, shell corporations and trading companies.  Tobon oversees HSI financial crime and money laundering investigations in South Florida.

“Holding this event with HSI emphasizes Ocean Bank’s culture of complying with FinCEN rules and regulations,” said President and CEO Agostinho Alfonso Macedo.  “Ocean Bank does not and will not open accounts for the Venezuelan government or officials of the Venezuelan government or anyone classified by the U.S. government as a Politically Exposed Person from Venezuela.

In attendance at the seminar, moderated by Daniel Gutierrez, V.P, Regulatory Risk Manager for Ocean Bank and Chair of the Florida International Bankers Association's (FIBA) Anti-Money Laundering Committee, were Ocean Bank’s senior management team, officers who handle Venezuelan business accounts and the BSA/Regulatory Risk staff.

“At Ocean Bank we hold our officers and staff to the highest standard,” Macedo said. “This event continues to educate the Ocean Bank team on current global issues targeting our industry.”

The presentation included “Red Flags” banks should look for in dealing with Venezuela:

· Transactions involving Venezuelan government contracts that are directed to personal accounts.
· Transactions involving Venezuelan government contracts that are directed to companies that operate in an unrelated line of business.
· Transactions involving shell corporations, general “trading companies,” or companies that lack a general business purpose.
· Documentation corroborating transactions involving Venezuelan government contracts that include charges at substantially higher prices than market rates or that include overly simple documentation.
· Payments involving Venezuelan government contracts that originate from non-official Venezuelan accounts or from third parties that are not Venezuelan Government entities.
· Cash deposits instead of wire transfers in the accounts of companies with Venezuelan government contracts.
· Transactions for the purchase of real estate—primarily in the South Florida and Houston, Texas regions—involving current or former Venezuelan government officials.

Partnership for Public Service honors civil servants and presents first-ever Spirit of Service award at Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals gala

WASHINGTON (PRWEB) October 02, 2018

The nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service will host the 17th annual Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals (Sammies) awards gala on Tuesday, October 2 to honor outstanding civil servants who have made significant contributions to the health, safety and prosperity of the American people. Considered the “Oscars of government service,” the Sammies have earned a reputation as the premier awards program recognizing innovation in the federal government.

The Partnership also will present the first-ever Spirit of Service award to Jeff Bezos – founder and CEO, Amazon.com; founder, Blue Origin; and owner, The Washington Post. Designed to shine a spotlight on individuals outside of government who have made significant contributions to public service, the award recognizes Bezos for the countless ways he and his companies work to advance important fields such as space exploration and national security, as well as help government deliver services more effectively and efficiently.

“These are not normal times for our nation’s civil servants. Yet, they continue to serve in extraordinary ways, and we need to recognize and celebrate their important work,” said Max Stier, president and CEO, of the Partnership for Public Service. “The 2018 Service to America Medal recipients represent the best in government, the dedicated, smart and innovative public servants who work tirelessly behind-the-scenes to serve the public interest.”

Judy Woodruff, the anchor and managing editor of “PBS NewsHour,” will emcee the gala. Adding to the evening’s excitement will be best-selling author and 2018 Sammies selection committee member Michael Lewis, who will engage Bezos in a fireside chat. Lewis’ newly released book, “The Fifth Risk,” takes readers behind the scenes during the 2016 presidential transition at the departments of Agriculture, Commerce and Energy and includes stories about dedicated public servants who are on the frontlines serving the American public during the change in administrations.

Special gala presenters include: Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie; Federal Trade Commission Chairman Joseph Simons; National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins; Office of Management and Budget Deputy Director for Management Margaret Weichert; and Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.).

The seven award winners were among 27 finalists announced in May 2018 and chosen from more than 300 nominations submitted to the Partnership for Public Service. The medalists were chosen by a prestigious selection committee of leaders from government, business, foundations, academia, entertainment and the media.

The 2018 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals recipients are:· The evening’s top honor, Federal Employee of the Year, will be presented to Dr. Daniel L. Kastner of the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, Maryland). Thousands of people, including young children, are afflicted by mysterious genetic diseases that cause recurring strokes, high fevers, arthritis, severe pain, inflammation and other symptoms. Kastner uncovered the genetic causes of seven rare, debilitating illnesses he categorized as auto inflammatory diseases. He also identified 14 previously undiagnosed illnesses and found effective treatments for 12 of them, alleviating suffering for thousands of patients in the U.S. and around the world.

· The Career Achievement Medal recipient is Dr. Marshalyn Yeargin-Allsopp of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Atlanta, Georgia). As awareness about the number of children with autism and other developmental disabilities grew sharply in the 1980s, no one knew how common these conditions were or how to effectively deploy resources for health, education and social services. Yeargin-Allsopp pioneered ground-breaking research and surveillance systems that for the first time documented the prevalence of autism, intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, vision impairment and epilepsy among children.

· The Homeland Security and Law Enforcement Medal winners are Karen D. Dodge of the Federal Trade Commission (Chicago, Illinois) and M argaret (Molly) Moeser of the Department of Justice (Washington, D.C.). Con artists for years used Western Union’s money transfer system to fraudulently obtain hundreds of millions of dollars from consumers who were duped into paying for services and products that were never provided. Moeser and Dodge led parallel nationwide criminal and civil investigations that resulted in the world’s largest money transfer company admitting to allowing criminals to use its service to collect scam-related payments. The company forfeited $586 million to reimburse the victims and committed to identify and stop future illegal transactions.

· Andrew M. Herscowitz and the Power Africa Team of the U.S. Agency for International Development (Pretoria, South Africa) are the winners of the National Security and International Affairs Medal. About 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to electricity, trapping millions in poverty and stunting economic growth. Herscowitz and the Power Africa team brought together technical and legal experts, the private sector, financial institutions, 12 federal agencies, and governments from around the world to provide electricity to more than 50 million people in this region. The team’s 117 electrification projects have spurred economic development, while generating hundreds of millions of dollars in export opportunities for U.S. companies.

· Marcella (Marcy) Jacobs and the Digital Service Team of the Department of Veterans Affairs (Washington, D.C.) are honored with the Management Excellence Medal. Veterans who go online to obtain information, benefits and services from the VA often have been frustrated by a complicated tangle of websites, forms, logins and insufficient status updates. Jacobs and the Digital Service team streamlined many online processes for veterans so they can more easily discover, apply for, track and manage the services and benefits they have earned. This includes a simplified login system and new ways for veterans to apply for health and education benefits and monitor disability claims and appeals.

· The Promising Innovations Medal winners are Parimal Kopardekar (PK), Ph.D., and the UTM Team of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Ames Research Center (Moffett Field, California). By 2020, an estimated 700,000 commercial drones will be flying millions of times a year in low-altitude airspace, creating the prospect of accidents and congestion in an unregulated, airborne Wild West. Kopardekar and his team worked across agencies and with private-sector partners to design the first-of-its-kind traffic management system for unmanned aerial vehicles. They developed a set of concepts, rules and technologies that will allow commercial drones to safely deliver packages, monitor traffic and aid search and rescue operations.

· Margaret (Peggy) Honein, Ph.D. of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Atlanta, Georgia) is the recipient of the Science and Environment Medal. The mosquito-borne Zika virus began spreading to the U.S. and its territories in 2015 and 2016, triggering devastating birth defects and causing widespread alarm as the government grappled with how to control this health crisis. Honein quickly assembled a team that collected and analyzed critical nationwide data on the spread of the Zika virus in order to protect pregnant women and babies from this terrible health threat. They determined how the virus worked, established clinical guidelines for physicians, disseminated vital information to the public and provided resources to help women find and access specialty services.

The fourth annual Service to America Medals People’s Choice award was presented in July to Alison Smith, Ph.D. of the Naval Surface Warfare Center (Crane, Indiana). While all 27 Sammies finalists were eligible to win this award, the public voted for Smith because they believed she made the most admirable contribution to the American people. The Defense Department spends billions of dollars a year on parts for weapons and military equipment that run the gamut from microelectronics for fighter jets and missile guidance systems to materials used in engine mounts. If a shady operator along the supply chain slips in counterfeit or potentially defective components, it puts at risk the nation’s security and the lives of military service members. Smith pioneered the use of nanoparticles to mark sensitive military equipment with a unique fingerprint to guard against counterfeit products and protect our nation’s warfighters.

The entire awards ceremony will be streamed live from Washington, D.C. and viewable on the Partnership for Public Service’s Facebook and Twitter accounts beginning at 6:30 p.m. EDT.

The premier and national sponsors for the 2018 Service to America Medals are Mrs. Ronnie Heyman and the Heyman Family, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Chevron, and Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert.
