Daniel Palmer fights back tears as he appears in court charged with murder of Joao Esteves This is Sussex -- A MAN has appeared in court this morning charged with the murder of a Portuguese man who was found lying unconscious in a Three Bridges alleyway. Daniel Palmer, 23, from Maunsell Park, Station Hill, Three Bridges, was charged last night. At Crawley Magistrates' Court he fought back tears as he spoke only to confirm his name, age and address, in a hearing which was over in a few minutes. There were eight people in the public gallery, seven of whom were apparently friends and family of Palmer. One looked him in the eye and banged his chest in a sign of solidarity as Palmer was led away to the cells at the end of the hearing. Others told him "Keep your head high" and "Don't worry, don't worry" as he was led away. Palmer was remanded in custody and will appear again at Lewes Crown Court tomorrow. No plea was made to the charge of murder. There were also no details given on why the victim is believed to have been attacked or how he was attacked. Palmer was charged with murder at 4.45pm yesterday (Wednesday) the court was told. The victim was named yesterday as Joao Esteves, 45, from Lisbon in Portugal. He was found with serious head injuries at 3.25am on Sunday (January 19) in an alleyway between Stephenson Way and Haslett Avenue East. The court was told that the alleged crime occurred on Sunday. Previously police were not sure if Mr Esteves had been attacked late on Saturday night or early on Sunday morning. Two men aged 33 and 48 and a 22-year-old woman, all from Crawley, who were also arrested on Sunday, have been released on bail until March 12 while officers carry out further inquiries. Police believe Mr Esteves was attacked along Haslett Avenue East cycle path, opposite Three Bridges Football Club, where two footpaths meet at a pedestrian crossing. As well as the alleyway, a section of land behind Three Bridges Free Church has also been cordoned off this week as forensics officers hunt for clues. Reported by This is 3 days ago.
