Rajasthan face acid test against mighty Mumbai Indians

$

*Rewarded for their team effort and consistency so far in the tournament, it will be a test of character for Rajasthan Royals as they gear up to take on heavyweights Mumbai Indians in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match here tomorrow.*

Skipper Rahul Dravid and his men will be playing in their own den and the conditions too would suit them, but relying on external factors would certainly not be enough to see them through against the formidable Mumbai outfit.

The visitors' all-round strength makes them the favourites going into the match at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium.

Both Rajasthan and Mumbai have six points each from four outings having won three matches respectively, but the visitors have a better net run rate of +1.150, which have placed them at the top of the table.

While Rajasthan, with a net rate of +O.230, are placed at the third position.
Happy with the "underdogs" tag, Rajasthan know it well that the visitors, despite having big stars in their ranks, have never been able to convert the early promise into a title win.

They finished runners-up once, losing to Chennai Super Kings in the final 2010.
The lavish spending has ensured that Mumbai have at their disposal greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, with T20 specialists Keiron Pollard, Lasith Malinga and Rohit Sharma only adding to the outfit's strengths.

There are others such as Glen Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik, Ambati Rayadu and Munaf Patel and they also have a good bench strength.

The visitors have been riding on Dinesh Karthik, who has plundered 224 runs with two fifties and a best score of 86 against Delhi Daredevils.

Sharma, too, is good nick and has amassed 155 runs while Pollard, like always, has excelled with both bat and ball.

Tendulkar has also shown good form but has not been able to convert his starts into big knocks.

Their bowling, with Malinga joining the squad, wears a lethal look.
Mitchell Johnson, Pragyan Ojha, Harbhajan Singh and Pollard give them the variety and the options for any surface.

The fact that they had thrashed Rajasthan Royals here in the previous edition by 10 wickets would also give them added confidence.

Barring last edition's drubbing, the hosts, champions in the first edition, have always stood up to Mumbai's challenge, beating them in four out of six meetings.

Rajasthan are happy that Dravid, with two half centuries under his belt is looking as solid as ever, with Ajinkya Rahane proving to be the perfect foil.

Shane Watson, who missed a couple of matches early on, looked in good nick against Kings XI Punjab, giving the side options. Brad Hodge and Kevin Cooper have also played their roles well.

But despite playing in front of the home crowd on a familiar track, Rajasthan will have to raise the bar to match the might of Mumbai.

The wicket has assisted the seamers as well as the spinners and batting has not been that easy, and it is expected to make the contest even more interesting.

It looks like Emily (Emily VanCamp) will once again find herself betrothed by the end of Season 2 of "Revenge." But who's the lucky guy this time? Aiden (Barry Sloane)? Jack (Nick Wechsler)?

As it turns out, Emily and Daniel (Joshua Bowman) are giving the marriage thing another shot, based on the description for the May 5th episode, titled "Engagement."

Check out the official description of "Revenge's" May 5th installment from ABC below:

Emily plots her next move in her new role as Daniel's fiance, while Aiden struggles with the re-engagement. Meanwhile, Jack learns more than he bargained for, and desperate times call for desperate measures as Conrad's gubernatorial numbers slip after Victoria's big reveal on "Nightline."

According to series creator Mike Kelley, however, Emily's intentions are far form pure.

"For the time being at least, it’s firmly cemented in her revenge plan,” he told TVLine.

"I think she's definitely a lot more calculated than she was in the first season," Josh Bowman, who plays Daniel, told Wetpaint of Emily. "She's a lot more ruthless than she was in the first season. Any love that she had for Daniel in the first season, or possible love that she had with Daniel, is, for sure, just vaporized into thin air. She's just hell bent on revenge now and needs to use me as an access key to carry out her mission."

As Season 2 of "Revenge" wraps up (the finale airs on Sun., May 12), the plot is only getting darker. Kelley previously told TVLine that "one of our core castmembers will not survive the finale."

Season 2 of "Revenge" has already seen the demise of Amanda (Margarita Levieva) -- a.k.a. Fauxmanda -- and the less favorable Nate Ryan (Michael Trucco).

*Do you think Emily and Daniel will make it down the aisle? Who do you think will meet his/her death in the "Revenge" season finale? Sound off in the comments!*

"Revenge" airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Reported by Huffington Post 1 hour ago.

Idiopathy by Sam Byers – review

$
0
0
Coruscating human interaction forms the heart of this bleak and satirical debut novel

First BSE, then foot-and-mouth disease, and most recently the horsemeat scandal – cattle have been a focal point of potential disaster. Now, first-time novelist Sam Byers has used the cow as a symbol of societal malaise in his invention of the all-too believable syndrome of rapidly spreading bovine idiopathic entrancement. What follows is a howling dig at cultural myopia and a more serious examination of its source, classified by Byers as an idiopathy, the definition of which is: "A disease or condition that arises spontaneously or for which the cause is unknown." The cows are tangential; the heart of the book is any number of unhappy human interactions.

Katherine and Daniel have broken up after a five-year relationship maintained by pathological cruelty and one-upmanship (hers) and floundering insecurity (his). One year on, he has been rapidly promoted as a leading biochemical researcher; she is in the same dull but malignly powerful facilities-management role at a large corporation. Katherine is spiralling to disaster, engaged in opportunistic sex with men she dislikes, as "morals were what dense people clung to in lieu of a personality". Rare breaks from work involve sitting catatonically in front of the television in a food-encrusted dressing gown; once, she half-heartedly attempts suicide.

By contrast Daniel, superficially at least, is on the up, comfortably settled with the self-improving and humourless Angelica, with whose po‑faced eco‑ethics and eco-friends Byers has some well-aimed fun. There isn't much that escapes his attention: multinationals; environmentalists; parenting, both absent and uncomfortably full-on. The rise of the misery memoir, instant celebrity and a mercenary ability to betray one's children are expertly satirised in the figure of the mother of Nathan, Katherine and Daniel's erstwhile friend.

Nathan had disappeared just before their split: his absence, they are to discover, caused by a major breakdown and an episode of self-harming so severe he required skin grafts. Now released from a psychiatric unit, he is back at home where, to his horror, his mother has turned his experiences into a book. Mother Courage: One Woman's Battle Against Maternal Blame is enthusiastically publicised by the TV appearances and Twitter feeds.

For Katherine and Daniel, the family unit is similarly fraught. A loaded visit from Katherine's mother and high-achieving sister has "both of them trailing a flatulent cloud of smugness that Katherine felt would have to be professionally removed after they left". Daniel's gnomic conversations with his dementia-ridden father are both banal and heartbreaking.

Byers saves the best lines and deepest self-loathing for Katherine, a misanthropist whose allure and self-destructiveness echo that monstrous yet ultimately vulnerable creation, Nicola Six in Martin Amis's nihilistic London Fields. There is something heroic about the way she drags herself through life: a put-down here, a mot juste there.

But her magnificent emptiness is not sustained throughout the novel. Byers makes his characters peak too early, so that the finale – a blackly farcical reunion between the three friends – fizzles rather than fizzes. Daniel's and Katherine's respective nemeses play excellent supporting parts, though: Sebastian, a pony-tailed polemicist who pickets Daniel's place of work daily; and Keith, the office lothario with whom Katherine is occasionally involved. It is during a holiday with Keith that the pitilessness of humanity is starkly revealed to Katherine; even as at its end, she is left with an unforeseen situation for which she must take responsibility. For all his lacerating one-liners, Byers's real skill is the pathos achieved through bleakness. Reported by guardian.co.uk 4 days ago.

Daniel Wagner: Why Moscow Is Important to Pyongyang

$
0
0
The Kremlin has certainly not been subtle in opining on what is at stake on the Korean Peninsula, stating earlier this month that a military conflict there could make Chernobyl "seem like a child's fairy tale." The characterization serves to highlight what is at stake for Pyongyang and Seoul, but also the impact the outcome of the conflict could have on Moscow. While Russia's influence on the People's Democratic Republic of Korea (the DPRK) is unquestionably limited -- as is that of every other country in the region, even China -- it shares China's desire to limit the amount of influence the U.S. may derive from a strengthened South Korea in the process. What happens next could have a larger impact on Russian/U.S. relations, which have once again turned frosty as a result of an escalation of the tit-for-tat diplomatic tussle resulting from the Magnitsky affair.

The Kremlin's ties with the DPRK leadership date back to the Japanese occupation of Korea, when Joseph Stalin offered Korean guerrilla units sanctuary in the USSR. In fact, Kim Il-sung received his administrative and military education in the USSR and Stalin chose him as a potential leader of Korea. During the Korean War, the Soviet air force provided North Korea with air defense capability and the USSR was Pyongyang's main trading partner and sponsor throughout the Cold War. Almost one hundred factories were built in North Korea with Moscow's technical assistance and hundreds of thousands of DPRK citizens received their education in the Soviet Union. In the 1980s, Moscow's partnership with Pyongyang began to erode as a result of Gorbachev's decision to convert trade with the DPRK to hard currency. This also coincided with China's rise as a regional power

Under Yeltsin, Russia sought to join the club of western democracies and deepen trade relations with South Korea -- two moves that froze relations between Pyongyang and Moscow. In addition, during the late 1990s Russia's 'experiment' with democratic romanticism came to an end and the Kremlin's foreign policy vis-à-vis the DPRK grew increasingly realpolitik in nature. The shift was based on the conclusion that the Western powers' influence over the Korean Peninsula offered Russia little, while a partnership with the DPRK was in Russia's national interest. Yet despite improved political ties under Putin, Russian-DPRK trade levels remained low, with bilateral trade totaling just $80 million in 1999 -- just a fraction of the $2.8 billion level of 1988.

As China's economic clout grew over the past two decades throughout the region and Pyongyang grew increasingly isolated, Beijing replaced Moscow as the DPRK's primary benefactor and closest ally. Bilateral trade nearly tripled between 1995 and 2005, and tripled again over the past six years, reaching $5.6 billion in 2011. That year Chinese-DPRK trade exceeded that of Russia more than 200-fold and currently accounts for nearly 90 percent of North Korea's total trade. China's political influence in North Korea is a natural outgrowth of its unrivaled economic relationship, but remains limited by the nature of the Kim dynasty's bellicosity and unpredictability.

Although far less influential today than it was 25 years ago, Pyongyang continues to value its partnership with Moscow, given the geostrategic issues at stake, and undoubtedly wishes to use its relationship with Russia for its own benefit. Kim Jong-un, and his handlers, surely recognize that Moscow is uniquely positioned to lubricate the process of resuming six party talks, given its potential leverage with China -- something neither Japan, South Korea or the U.S has, and which may prove rather valuable in the future.

The DPRK has other reasons to reach out to Russia. Apart from sharing a small border with Moscow, the cash-strapped country derives revenue from indentured North Korean workers in Siberia. And in exchange for the cancellation of $11 billion of national debt, last fall Moscow proposed a Russia/DPRK/South Korea pipeline that would transfer Russia's natural gas to the South. The North would obviously yield benefits from serving as the transit point between Russia and the South, but Seoul has reservations about being so reliant on the North for such an important economic input.

For Russia, the stakes of the ongoing escalation between Pyongyang and Seoul are higher than many may recognize. If war were to break out, the presumed influx of refugees into Russia could create a humanitarian crisis and a burdensome price tag for the Kremlin -- just as it would for China. Russia is similarly vulnerable to any radiation that may blow from the peninsula on to Russian territory. Any economic, political or military impact between the DPRK and Russia clearly also has implications for China, which Russia is anxious to remain on favorable terms. For all these reasons, Moscow surely wishes to contribute to a de-escalation of tension on the Korean Peninsula. As is the case with Beijing, Moscow views cooperative ties with Pyongyang as necessary for greater Russian economic influence throughout Northeast Asia.

The idea of a greater U.S. military presence on Russia's doorstep in Northeast Asia is not welcome news either to Moscow or Beijing, but China and Russia share America's interest in a Korean Peninsula free of nuclear weapons. Russia's support for numerous United Nations Security Council resolutions demonstrate Moscow's position that conflict resolution in Korea must be achieved with all parties via mutual respect for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. As is the case vis-à-vis Iran, while Moscow does not want North Korea to be armed with nuclear weapons, it is similarly opposed to any unilateral military action being taken against Pyongyang. If the U.S. were to take any pre-emptive measures against North Korea, additional complications will surely arise in the Obama Administration's relationship with Putin's Russia. Regrettably, neither side seems particularly interested in improving bilateral relations at this time.

While China wields most of the influence over the DPRK, the Kremlin's growing aspirations to become more influential in Northeast Asia make it an important player in the standoff on the Korean Peninsula -- something many analysts have not fully considered. Given Russia's proven ability to influence the direction of the Syrian crisis, impact the West's ability to impose sanctions at will over Iran, and its warming relations with China, Russia should be considered a force to be reckoned with in the Korean equation. While discussions with Russia may indeed be going on behind the scenes vis-à-vis the DPRK, such dialogue does not appear to be acknowledged as part of the solution to the problem. Perhaps it should be.

Daniel Arrigg Koh: They Won't Mess With Our Marathon: Boston Is About Passion

$

Each U.S. city has its defining characteristic. DC is about politics. New York is about business. Los Angeles is about entertainment. And Boston? Well, Boston is a little different. Boston's characteristic is passion. A wicked big tidal wave of it.

In Boston, there's 600,000 people -- just 1/13th the size of New York City. But we're a freaking loud and passionate 600,000 that has created a community identity like no other. The American revolution began in our streets. Our spirit to better ourselves and others fuels world-class hospitals and schools. Boston is home to the most determined and fanatic sports fans. We're proud of our accents, our chowder, our dirty water, and most of all, our Marathon.

The Boston Marathon is a happy day in the city of Boston -- perhaps the happiest day of the year. Schools and businesses close, and a mass of people flock to the streets to cheer on complete strangers in an amazing symbol of human kindness and community, that has to be seen to believe. I should know. In the 4 times I've run through the streets on Patriots Day, I've been overwhelmed by the generosity of people who gave me water, food, a shout of encouragement, a high-five, and even just a big smile. Last year, it was 90 degrees on Marathon Monday, and Bostonians were out in droves, using their own hoses to cool off passing runners. Needless to say, it's an inherent part of who we are.

Before joining HuffPost I served as an Advisor to Mayor Tom Menino, a symbol of Boston in himself. Mayor Menino embodies our ruthlessly passionate spirit -- a man who wakes up everyday at 4:30 AM to spend his days with the citizens of his community -- uniting our 21 neighborhoods, one handshake at a time (it has widely been reported that he has met more than half of Boston's residents). His example is reflected in all of us, illustrated by the countless citizens who rushed to help victims of the explosion and opened up their homes to complete strangers.

We will never understand why anyone would want to commit such tragedy. But there's one thing that's clear -- they won't mess with our Marathon. Bostonians will never allow it. Next year, the runners will be even more determined, and the crowds will be larger. It's in our spirit -- and it's unbreakable.

Boston is pride. Boston is passion. Boston is forever. And no tragedy, however unspeakable, will ever change the deep honor to say these words: I am from Boston.

Nanpean mum battling to get ovarian cancer drug

Nanpean mum battling to get ovarian cancer drug This is Cornwall --

A YOUNG mum battling ovarian cancer claims she was repeatedly misdiagnosed by doctors and is now fighting for a lifeline medicine after falling victim to a postcode lottery of care.

Mum of four Cher Melsom, 37, of Grenville Close, Nanpean, first complained about excruciating pain and extreme weight loss three years ago – but when the former youth worker, who has a mental health illness, went to her GP surgery in St Austell they told her she had manic depression and gave her a cocktail of drugs.

After repeatedly seeing her GP, Helen Leigh, at the Woodland Road Surgery, and Dr Leigh senior, she was eventually sent by a locum for an ultrasound at the beginning of 2012.

This revealed she had large ovaries but no action was taken.

"It was just swept under the carpet. It was put down to my mental health and that I had depression," she said.

However, in October, while homeless after a car ploughed into her property, she began to suffer pains in her groin and lower abdomen – symptoms of ovarian cancer.

Two months later after an emergency referral to the gynaecology unit at Newquay, in January cancer was diagnosed.

A month later at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro surgeons removed three tumours from her ovaries and spleen and performed a full hysterectomy.

She has begun chemotherapy, and her consultant has said a drug called Avastin could extend her life by years, but last week her application for funding for the drug - drug which is not routinely funded for this cancer in Cornwall - was turned down.

"I'm going to die; that's the fact of it," she said, "but I'm determined to fight against it.

"This drug would give me precious time with my children. My children only have me and I only have them."

She said though her consultant was looking at other funding methods, "I feel I'd be robbing somebody else if I did get it."

A petition launched on Friday to Prime Minister David Cameron calling for her to get the drug has more than 560 names already.

Ms Melsom is mother to Jonathan, 15, who lives in Lichfield with his father, Lizzie Louise, 14, Mollie Olivia, 11, and eight-year-old Daniel Aran, who live with her.

"Most people live their lives for the future, always making plans. Now we're living every day to its fullest," she said.

The hardest question to answer was when Daniel asked: "Will you be in my future, mummy?"

She is also determined to use her plight to help others. "Mental health can't be allowed to overshadow serious illness," she said. "Some GPs need to know this. I was told it was all in my head, part of my depression,

"I'd love to see my youngest boy reach 18 but there's a massive possibility I might not even be able to see next Christmas.

"I just want as long as I can have with my children; they need their mum. They need me." Reported by This is 9 hours ago.

'Who Would Do Something Like This?'

'Who Would Do Something Like This?' Patch North Andover, MA --

North Andover Barber Shop owner John Daniel may owe his family's well-being to a twist of fate and a cool breeze.

Daniel and his wife were at the Boston Marathon, near the finish line, close to the area where the second explosion would hit.

"We were standing right in front of Lord & Taylor," Daniel said. "There were families there. We were there having a great time."

A little while before the blasts, however, a cool breeze set in, prompting Daniel and his wife to leave to go to lunch.

When the couple arrived at a restaurant in Somerville, what they saw on TV news reports shocked them.

"If you saw on the news, the first bomb went off, and then probably 15 seconds later was the second bomb, and that was across the street from Lord & Taylor. We were probably about25 feet from where the second bomb went off."

The explosions killed three people -- an 8-year-old boy, a 29-year-old woman and a Boston University graduate student -- and injured more than 170 others.

"It's devastating to think, who would do something like this?" Daniel said.

While many people have expressed tough resolve to go to the marathon next year, Daniel plans to stay home. A new father -- his son was born in September -- he said he has become more cautious about big events and protecting his family. Reported by Patch 4 hours ago.

Defeated Capriles Condemns Violent Protests

By Daniel Wallis and Enrique Andres Pretel
CARACAS, April 17 (Reuters) - Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles distanced himself from post-election street violence after seven fatalities threatened to turn the South American OPEC nation's vote dispute into a full-blown crisis.
Capriles had planned to lead a march on the National Electoral Council (CNE) on Wednesday to demand a recount after official results gave a narrow win to Nicolas Maduro, the chosen successor of late socialist leader Hugo Chavez.
But the opposition leader canceled the rally on Tuesday, saying the government had plotted to "infiltrate" it, start trouble and blame it on him.
"To all my followers ... this is a peaceful quarrel. Whoever is involved in violence is not part of this project, is not with me," Capriles told reporters. "It is doing me harm."
The government earlier said seven people were killed on Monday and accused Capriles' supporters of attacking ruling Socialist Party offices and people celebrating Maduro's victory.
Maduro earlier accused the opposition of trying to trigger a coup d'etat and said he would not allow the planned march to go ahead. His government is threatening legal action against Capriles.

About 135 people were arrested and more than 60 hurt during Monday's violent clashes, including one woman whom a mob tried to burn alive, officials said.
In one well-off Caracas neighborhood, police fired teargas and rubber bullets to disperse masked youths who chanted "fraud" as they blocked streets, burnt tires and threw stones.
Protests were much quieter on Tuesday with thousands of Capriles' followers holding peaceful rallies outside CNE offices around the country.
Capriles says the government is responsible for the violence because it denied his camp's demands for a full recount.
Maduro won with 50.8 percent of the vote against Capriles' 49.0 percent, according to the electoral authority. He is due to be formally sworn in on Friday.
A continuation of violent protests could hurt the opposition's democratic standing, despite having achieved its best showing in a presidential poll since the Chavez era began, and just as Capriles has consolidated himself as its leader.
The government has forcefully denounced the violence as part of a "fascist" plan to destabilize the country and set the stage for a re-run of a brief 2002 coup against Chavez.
Maduro held a meeting on Tuesday with senior executives of state oil company PDVSA, who stood up to chant "They won't return!", referring to politicians who ruled before Chavez won power in 1998 and launched his self-styled socialist revolution.

IRREGULARITIES
Maduro campaigned for election on a promise to continue his late boss's hardline socialist policies. He had a big lead in polls but that evaporated in the final days and the result was much closer than his team had expected.
Capriles says he is sure he won the election and that his team has evidence of 3,200 irregularities, from voters using fake IDs to intimidation of volunteers at polling centers.
Opposition sources say their count showed Capriles received an extra 300,000 to 400,000 votes that did not appear in the official tally.
The CNE has refused to hold a recount, saying an audit of ballots from 54 percent of the polling centers, in a widely respected electronic voting system, had already been done.
Maduro initially said he was open to a recount but has changed his position. He has called on his supporters to demonstrate all week, culminating in a big rally in Caracas on Friday to coincide with his inauguration ceremony.
He jumped on Capriles' cancellation of Wednesday's march, saying the opposition leader had started to "backpedal."
"But no matter how much they retreat, they'll have to face justice sooner rather than later," Maduro said before turning on Capriles. "You are responsible for this. Don't disguise yourself as a pacifist."
In a session of Congress on Tuesday, 'Chavista' legislators accusing Capriles of inciting bloodshed and called for him to face a formal investigation and charges. Two opposition lawmakers said they were insulted and punched by pro-government legislators.
Maduro's slight margin of victory has raised doubts about whether the disparate alliance that formed around Chavez during his 14 years in power can hold together without him.
