A new book by Daniel Brook describes the “History of Future Cities.” Mumbai, Dubai, Shanghai and St. Petersburg, he argues, will model city life in years to come because they will be more able to attract smart people from all over the world who, congregating together, will make wonderfully creative places to live and work. The book will likely be greeted as further evidence that America’s salad days are behind her.

Motorcyclist in Critical Condition After 56th Street Crash

A Tampa motorcyclist was injured in a crash Monday morning, April 1, at the intersection of 56th Street and Park Ridge Avenue.
Benjamin Frederick Lankford, 26, of 14621 Grenadine Drive, Apt. 1, Tampa was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition following the crash, which occurred at 8:48 a.m., said Temple Terrace Police in a media release.
“Witnesses said Lankford was traveling northbound on 56th Street, weaving in and out of traffic,” according to the release.
Arvid Martin, 60, of 315 Park Ridge Ave., Temple Terrace was turning left in his Jeep Grand Cherokee to go southbound on 56th Street when Lankford’s motorcycle struck his vehicle, police said in the release.
“The motorcycle then struck a telephone pole, throwing Lankford from the bike, police said,” according to the release. “Martin was not injured in the vehicle crash.”
Temple Terrace Patch readers who witnessed the scene said northbound and southbound lanes of 56th Street were closed after the accident and a helicopter landed on 56th Street.

The crash, which is the second motorcycle accident that has occurred on 56th Street in the past two weeks, is under investigation. On March 19, Daniel Ray Baker, 43, of 41520 Merrick Road, Zephyrhills was killed when he apparently lost control of his 1997 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and crashed just south of the intersection at Fowler Avenue.

Mom Charged in Helping Son Steal Gets ARD

The Nazareth mom accused of driving her 16-year-old son and his friend across the Lehigh Valley to break into unlocked vehicles will have a clean record if she follows through on probation.
Christine Petchonka, 46, of the 100 block of S. Main Street, was accepted Monday into the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program for first-time offenders, according to a report in The Morning Call.
The report says Petchonka's record will be expunged if she completes nine months of probation and pays court costs and fines.
Petchonka had been facing charges of recklessly endangering another person, criminal conspiracy—theft from a motor vehicle, loitering or prowling at nighttime and theft from a motor vehicle.
According to a police criminal complaint filed by Officer Daniel Troxell, Petchonka admitted to driving the two boys and Ian Shoemaker, 29, so they could “steal from cars in a certain area on a random night.”
Petchonka stashed a variety of electronic devices, like GPS systems, cameras and cell phones, at Nazareth Pike Self Storage in Lower Nazareth Township. Shoemaker, the complaint says, gave the stolen goods to Petchonka for storing purposes.
In one of several purses in the storage unit, according to the complaint, Troxell found six GPS systems, multiple cell phones and other electronics.
Petchonka also admitted to police that items were sometimes pawned at locations in Easton and Allentown. Because not all of the items can be accounted for, Nazareth Police Chief Thomas Trachta estimates $20,000 in goods were stolen over several months.
Petchonka’s son and the other 16-year-old male were also charged—in juvenile court—for their roles in the thefts.
Shoemaker, who faced a whopping 410 counts, pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy—theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property, court records say. He was sentenced to 5-23 months in prison and two years probation.
But when Shoemaker was taken into custody in Plainfield Township, he claimed to be a Nebraska resident planning to take a bus back home the next day.
Court records say Shoemaker also pleaded guilty in February to giving false identification to a law enforcement officer and was sentenced to an additional 3-12 months in prison. Reported by Patch 5 hours ago.

Upcoming Court Cases: April 1, 2013

Unless otherwise noted, files at Washington County Superior Court contain the information about the following court cases. You can review them at the McGrath Judicial Complex.
The following chart is a list of cases we’re monitoring, either because they involve people from a Patch town, or because they involve a police department from a Patch town. Generally, we remove a case from the list if there is no new court date scheduled after a month, or if the case has been resolved - either a dismissal, a plea or a trial.
If we’re missing a case you’re interested in knowing about, feel free to leave a comment or to send Local Editor Stephen Greenwell a message at Stephen.greenwell@patch.com. We typically write up the summaries once a case has been resolved, although there can be a time lag depending on the individual case.

Chelsea 0-2 Aston Villa | NextGen Series final match report
• Chelsea 0-2 Aston Villa (Burke 49pen 90pen)
• Aston Villa secure NextGen Series trophy in Italy
Two second-half penalties for Aston Villa decided the destination of the NextGen Series trophy, the Under-19 European competition reaching its climax on the banks of Lake Como in Italy.
Chelsea had a tough passage through the knockout stages, where they defeated Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal, and in the first half especially they gave Villa plenty of problems with pacy attacking play. However chances were not taken and Villa, coached by the former Chelsea player Tony McAndrew, deserved credit for their resilience and the way they matched the London club in the second half.
Chelsea's confidence was dented after going behind soon after the interval, with the second goal coming right on the final whistle and shortly after they had been reduced to 10 men. More used to the bumpy pitch, having beaten Arsenal at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia three days earlier, the signs were Chelsea would get off to a good start in the final.
A Villa shot did clear the bar by some distance after a Nathan Ake error in the opening seconds but Chelsea hit back quickly with Lewis Baker playing Alex Kiwomya through the middle. Bradley Watkins, the Aston Villa goalkeeper, was quickly off his line to smother at the winger's feet.
Islam Feruz had a fierce shot saved inside the first 10 minutes, Jérémie Boga's confidence on the ball having created the chance. But when Villa did go forward Graham Burke shot tamely wide of Mitchell Beeney's goal. Chelsea should have gone ahead on 21 minutes. Ruben Loftus-Cheek won possession and Baker played the perfect pass inside the Villa left-back Lewis Kinsella. However, Kiwomya struck his shot just wide of the far post.
Chelsea were hit less than four minutes after the restart. Callum Robinson was near the byline when Alex Davey made contact with his leg. Robinson went down and Burke converted the penalty.
Kiwomya's day got worse on 88 minutes when he earned his second booking of the game. And Villa completed the task when Burke scored his second penalty with the final kick of the game, after Daniel Pappoe fouled Joshua Barton. Reported by guardian.co.uk 4 hours ago.

Flexible Solutions Announces Full Year, 2012 Financial Results

*Flexible Solutions Announces Full Year, 2012 Financial Results*
*Conference call* is scheduled for April 02, 2013. See the time and dial in number below.
VICTORIA, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- *FLEXIBLE SOLUTIONS INTERNATIONAL, INC. (NYSE Amex: FSI, FRANKFURT: FXT),* isthe developer and manufacturer of biodegradable polymers for oil extraction, detergent ingredients and water treatment as well as crop nutrient availability chemistry. Flexible Solutions also manufactures biodegradable and environmentally safe water and energy conservation technologies. Today the Company announces financial results for the full year ended December 31, 2012.
Mr. Daniel B. O'Brien, CEO, states, "We are, once again, very pleased to announce record revenue. 2012 revenue was 6% higher than revenue from the 2011 period and revenue growth is expected to continue in 2013. The economic slow-down in Europe and the drought in North America both played a part in the overall reduction in year over year revenue growth. The European slow down reduced revenue from bio-detergents and the drought reduced the growth rate of sales into the North American Agriculture market."
Mr. O'Brien continues, "The effects of last year's drought are still present in 2013. Our mid-west distribution has not taken up as much product in Q1 2013 as in Q1 2012. Reasons for this include; more growers and dealers who choose just in time purchases to conserve cash after last year as well as space and cash constraints at the distribution level. FSI management will release the Q1 revenue number next week once it has been finalized, however, we are already sure that Q1 revenue will be several hundred thousand dollars less than the year earlier period. Conversations with our distribution network indicate that they believe the sales not closed in Q1 will be made in Q2 and Q3 and strong growth in the sector is still expected for full year 2013.
· Sales for the full year 2012 were $16,400,107, up 6%, when compared to $15,518,635 for full year 2011. The result was an after tax GAAP accounting net loss of $1,084,447, or $0.08 per weighted average share, compared to an accounting net income of $182,990, or $0.01 per weighted average share in full year 2011.
· Non-GAAP operating cash flow: (for details see the following table). For the 12 months ending Dec. 31, 2012 net income (loss) reflects $1,326,983 of non-cash charges, Income Taxes of $1,126,468, gain on sale of equipment of $2,217, and interest income of $759. When non-cash charge items, items not related to current operations of the Company, are removed, the Company shows positive operating cash flow of $1,326,983 or $0.10 per share. This compares with 2011 operating cash flow of $1,894,659, or $0.14 per share.
· FSI shows a significantly higher depreciation expense in 2012 versus 2011, as a result of the commencement of depreciation of the Alberta factory. However the depreciation expense did not reduce income tax owed. The past and current factory construction and operation expenses and the current depreciation expense taken against the biomass factory in Alberta are potential accumulating assets (a loss- carry-forward) for FSI since these expenses are not associated with, nor charged against, the U.S. based NanoChem Division's revenue for income tax purposes.
The NanoChem division continues to be the dominant source of revenue and cash flow for the Company. New opportunities continue to unfold in detergent, water treatment, oil field extraction and agricultural use to further increase sales in this division. In past years, the NanoChem Division sales have been less volatile quarter to quarter. However, due to increasing sales to agriculture, revenue seasonality may become larger.

Northridge Kidnap Suspect May Be in County; Has Flaming Skeleton Tattoo

A man was behind bars Monday in connection with the kidnapping and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl who was taken from her family's Northridge home, but a second suspect may have gone to the San Diego area, according to authorities.
Daniel Martinez, 29, of West Hills, was arrested Sunday morning in the 18200 block of Rayen Street in Northridge, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
A second suspect—30-year-old Tobias Dustin Summers—identified by police over the weekend—remains at large.
Police said they believe he may have traveled to the San Diego area, and may have changed his appearance by shaving his head.
*For latest updates, see Northridge-Chatsworth Patch.*
The girl was snatched early Wednesday morning from her bedroom in the 8000 block of Oakdale Avenue, a subdivision with large lawns and trees about a half-mile south of Cal State Northridge.
She was apparently dropped off near Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Woodland Hills at 2:50 p.m. that day, and she walked to a nearby Starbucks, where she was found by a good Samaritan who pointed her toward police.
The girl was barefoot and appeared to be wearing different clothing than those she was reported to be wearing when she disappeared.
Police said the girl had abrasions, including some on her face, when she was found.
Investigators said they were searching for two suspects, and they named Summers as a target of their search on Saturday. They also said the girl had been taken to multiple locations, in different vehicles.
Summers has large tattoos of a flaming skeleton face, and a woman, on his right arm. He was described as a white man weighing about 160 pounds with blond, closely cropped hair and blue eyes.
Police said the suspect is a transient known to frequent the Devonshire, North Hollywood and greater San Fernando Valley areas.
Officers said Summers has a lengthy rap sheet dating back to 2002, and was released from custody last July—apparently as a result of the state's effort to relieve prison overcrowding. He has served prison terms for robbery, kidnapping, explosives possession and petty theft, police said.
Although he is not known to be a registered sex offender, Summers did have an arrest for battery in 2009 that involved child annoyance, according to police.
It was not known whether Summers knew the girl or anyone in her family, Smith said, and it was also unknown whether the girl was targeted or was a random victim.

*Previous story:* A suspect has been arrested in the case of a kidnapped 10-year-old Northridge girl, KNBC4 is reporting and the LAPD confirmed Monday.
The man is not Tobias Dustin Summers, who police identified as the primary suspect.
Summers is still being sought for his involvement with the kidnapping. Investigators believe that Summers may be in the San Diego area and may have changed his appearance by shaving his head.
Anyone who with information about Summers is urged to contact the police tip line at (213) 486-6890.
Anyone observing Summers is urged to call 911 immediately.
The case involves a 10-year-old girl who was reported missing when her mother noticed her bed empty about 3:30 a.m. last Wednesday in the family's home, in the 8000 block of Oakdale Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
About 3 p.m. Wednesday, somebody dropped the girl off at the Kaiser Permanente hospital in Woodland Hills, and she walked to a nearby Starbucks at Canoga Avenue and Oxnard Street, where a good Samaritan directed her to some police officers in the area.
The girl was sexually assaulted, law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times Thursday. Speaking on condition of anonymity, they told the Times that the abduction has been expanded to include a sex-crime investigation. Reported by Patch 2 hours ago.
