Teacher Saves Student from Choking to Death Patch Wayne, NJ --

Thanks to Susan O’Keefe’s quick action Taylor Kratzer is alive.

Kratzer, a sophomore at Wayne Hills High School, was eating a chicken wrap at lunch on Thursday when she started choking.

“All I remember is that I took a bite and I couldn’t swallow a piece of the chicken. I was coughing but it wasn’t coming back up,” Kratzer said. “I mouthed to two of my friends that I couldn’t breathe and that I needed help.”

Kratzer’s friends, Alyssa Alvino and Sydney Lowe, ran and got Susan O’Keefe. O’Keefe, an English teacher, was on cafeteria duty that day. She ran over and administered the Heimlich maneuver. The food was dislodged and O'Keefe helped clear Kratzer's airway.

“I was amazed that [O’Keefe] stepped up to the plate and just did what she had to do, without a second’s hesitation,” said Kratzer's mother Donna. “ I can’t thank her enough. What could you possible do for someone who gives priceless gift back to you?”

Krazter was sent to nurse Judy Davis for observation. Davis contacted Kratzer's parents and told them what happened.

“It’s one of those conservations that you don’t expect ever to have,” said Ed Kratzer.

Kratzer attended the prom the next day. O'Keefe was one of the chaperones.

"Thursday was scary, but eneded well," said Donna Kratzer. "One never knows what the outcome would have been if [O'Keefe] didn't stepped up to the plate."

Kratzer is on the competition cheerleading team and represents her class on the student council.

"Ms. O'Keefe gave us a priceless gift that day: our daughter's life," said Donna Kratzer. "Words or gifts cannot possibly say or express how thankful we are and how we truly feel."

O’Keefe could not be reached for comment Sunday night.

Neath still lead by 20pts despite draw

This is South Wales --

NEATH continue to head division one of the Thomas Carroll Insurance South Wales Association despite drawing with fourth-placed Ynystawe on Saturday.

The leaders finished on 174-4 from their allocated overs, while their opponents ended on 125 for the loss of the same number of wickets.

That result leaves Neath 20 points clear at the summit during a season in which they are yet to lose a game.

Carmarthen Wanderers are another unbeaten side, and they sit second after beating Cowbridge by 94 runs.

Batting first, Wanderers finished on 166 following an innings in which Daniel Jones hit 44, while Giles Thomas and Owain Davies both managed 38. Carmarthen eventually reached their total for the loss of seven wickets.

Cowbridge never came close to hitting their target as only one of their batsmen managed double figures — Sam Wood made 45.

They were eventually all out for just 72.

Daniel Jones took three of the visitors' wickets at the expense of only three runs, Leighton Walters claimed two, along with Ian Marsh and Owain Binding.

Tata Steel's 100-run win over Clydach keeps them in third.

Owen Davies contributed a hefty 93 as Tata finished on 204-7. Phillip Taylor hit 55, while the rest of the Tata order struggled to match the efforts of their openers.

The home side were in charge from the off and reached 138 before their first wicket fell. The man to go was Taylor, caught by Christopher Donne off the bowling of Brian Fisher.

Tata lost two more wickets while adding only another 31 runs to their total.

Donne was Clydach's most successful bowler, he took four wickets from eight overs, conceding 36 runs.

Fisher accounted for the other three wickets at a cost of 63 runs from 12 overs.

Fifth-placed Gowerton were held to a draw by visiting Dafen Welfare.

The hosts made 204-8 from their 45 overs and appeared a good bet for victory.

But they were unable to bowl out their stubborn opponents, who ended on 86-6.

Llangennech slipped to a 47-run defeat at Maesteg Celtic.

Batting first, Maesteg made 167-4 before Llangennech were all out for just 120.

That game was a basement battle between the division's bottom two sides and keeps Llangennech rooted to the foot of the table, a point adrift of Maesteg Celtic.

Clydach are a place above them, one rung behind Dafen. Reported by This is 10 hours ago.

VIDEO: Film-maker promises "sparks" in Palace documentary

This is Croydon --

THE makers of a new documentary charting Crystal Palace's journey to the Premier League have promised viewers will see "sparks fly".

Daniel Van Der Molen, 26, and Joseph Mainland, 27, followed the club from the day Ian Holloway took charge of the club right through to their promotion glory at Wembley.

The duo, who form Molen Media, could not have picked a better season and have produced a rarity – a film with a happy ending.

They were behind the scenes at the Amex Stadium for the already infamous "poogate" incident and features in-depth interviews with manager Holloway and the club's owners.

But Daniel said the film was never planned and began through fortunate timing.

He said: "We were invited to film a day in the life of a football club owner with Steve Parish back on November 3.

"It was planned for a long time but, as luck would have it, the day we had booked turned out to be Ian Holloway's first day in his new job.

"We thought it had the potential to be a good story to follow through to the end of the season and it just snowballed from there.

"We didn't really think it was going to be as dramatic as it turned out."

Footage released in the trailer shows a snippet of Holloway's furious reaction to finding the unwanted "mess" in Brighton's away dressing room.

Daniel added: "The game at Brighton is a treat for fans to watch because some real sparks fly behind the scenes.

"I think in the circumstances that was completely justified – although we didn't get up close to the offending item in the dressing room.

"We also spend a lot of time with the Crystal Girls [cheerleaders] which is never a bad thing."

The pair are now in negotiations with broadcasters to show the film.

Daniel said he was aware previous football documentaries have proved quite harmful to clubs and managers.

Queens Park Rangers' documentary about their promotion in 2011 was derided by the footballing community and Graham Taylor was widely mocked for the film Do I Not Like That, while he was England manager.

Daniel said the club were very helpful to them during the production process but that it was not quite access all areas.

He added: "Looking at other documentaries that have been made about football clubs, they can make those clubs look quite stupid.

"I don't think this does at all – it shows four fans who have bought their football club and really love it. The club is so well run.

"We didn't want to get too close or overstep the mark and Ian Holloway, quite rightly, made it clear that his teamtalks are a sacred thing."

Daniel, who is an Ajax fan because of his Dutch father, said the making of the film has turned him into an Eagle.

He said: "I used to go to Palace a lot when I was much younger and I asked my dad for a Palace shirt but my dad bought me two – an Ajax and a Holland shirt. I didn't have much choice!"

"But I have always considered Palace to be my English team and I love the club after this." Reported by This is 7 hours ago.

'Directing's Not Like Riding A Bike'

Steven Spielberg may be longtime regarded as one of the world's greatest living filmmakers, but even he admits his opus 'Lincoln' is of particular significance to him.

Strong words from the talent behind behind Schindler’s List (1993), Saving Private Ryan (1998), Jaws (1975), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and Jurassic Park (1993).

So why was a film about Lincoln's bid to pass the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery and ending the Civil War, so special and worth a whopping 11 years of preparation? We'll let him explain...

*Lincoln loomed large in your childhood but what was the era of history that first excited you?*

My first interest in history was war — the European war, WWII, and that would be because my father fought in that war and those were the first stories that he told me.

*Your father fought in the China-Burma-India theatre, right?*

Yes, CBI. He was involved in a couple of sorties, bombing missions and then because he was so good at electronic equipment and radios he became the Tech Sergeant, Head of Communications, for the airbase. So at that point he was grounded, but my dad did talk to me all through my childhood about WWII.

*It has been said that Lincoln is inspired in part by your reconciliation with your father…*

Not really. I had a reconciliation with my father 22 years ago. My father and I have been so close for 22 years and we were close before our hiatus from each other. That informed a lot of my movies, certainly, but it hasn’t informed my decisions to make certain movies. Even if I had had a really happy relationship with my father and there was no emotional hiatus for a decade and a half, I would still have probably made some of the same choices of movies that I have made.

*What did you learn about Lincoln as a father — you explore that aspect in the film?*

Lincoln had a very free parenting style. He let his kids run free and wild. When Willie was alive, Willie and Tad were two terrors, making mincemeat out of the White House staff and hooking up a homemade cart to a pet goat and racing up and down the corridors of the White House. That was fact. And then when Willie died Lincoln got closer to Tad because Tad really didn’t have a mother. Mary went into deep mourning and not just for six months, but for over two years and Lincoln, in a very protective way, always had Tad at his side dressed in his little Union Blues. But Robert and the President were a bit estranged, uncomfortable with one another and that is how we played it in the film.

*Before you start shooting any film you like to revisit certain films and filmmakers, Lean, Kurosawa etc. Did you run through anything specific before you began shooting Lincoln?*

No, I didn’t, because Lincoln was an 11-year process. I kept getting to a starting mark and having to back down off the blocks. About nine times I was at the starting blocks and then I had to stand down. So I didn’t prepare in that sense. And also my inspiration was the actual historical record not the Hollywood version of history so I didn’t use Hollywood to jump-start my inspiration with Lincoln. I found Lincoln to be a fine inspiration.

*Daniel Day-Lewis won an Oscar for his role of Lincoln in Spielberg's film*

*That said, were there any films made about him that you found interesting if not inspirational?*

The last time I saw the Henry Fonda film was about 20 years ago. That was 'Young Mr. Lincoln' made in 1938. And I purposely avoided seeing that. My memory of that movie is vague. The other film that I only saw once, and that was maybe 20 years ago as well, was the 1940 film with Raymond Massey, who played Lincoln. With those two exceptions there has not been a movie made about Abraham Lincoln for 72 years.

*You must have been very conscious of not over-eulogising the man?*

What Tony [Kushner, the screenwriter] and I avoided was any form of hero worship. Also we weren’t going to any great lengths to explore every aspect of him, because most of that to me was unknown, especially his depths. They are a private matter and scholars and historians can only speculate about where he went when he would go fugue and deep. That was often interpreted as depression but perhaps it was just that he was going some place to figure out the future. Nobody really knows and he certainly didn’t have a therapist in 1855. We did want him interacting not just with the big issue at hand — which was fighting to get enough votes to pass a constitutional amendment that would abolish slavery and end the war — but also we wanted to see him as a father and a husband.

*This film is your most dialogue heavy. Did you deliberately avoid action pieces, or were they just extraneous to the story you were telling?*

James McPherson, who is the great Civil War historian, said to us that the Civil War is a landscape so vast that even a gigantic figure like Abraham Lincoln could get lost in it. And we never forgot those words and to trifurcate this film between the North and the South on the battlefields of America, and Abraham Lincoln prosecuting the war, and trying to balance his righteous position, would have been like one of those Greatest Hits albums. We would not have been able to even attempt to allow you to get to know Lincoln, the man, the human being. So the war had to go.

*Did Lincoln’s own attitude towards slavery change at all or was it consistent?*

He never shifted perspective at all but he was an Artful Dodger when it came to political theatre. Lincoln was disgusted by slavery from the very first memories in his life but he told the South what they wanted to hear, to try to stem the loss of blood before the blood really started to spill. He told them, ‘Look, don’t secede and you can keep your slaves.’

People wrote that down and made an assumption that he wasn’t an Abolitionist at all. But Lincoln knew what he was saying. His mantra was ‘Union, Union, Union.’ But his subtext from childhood was ‘Equality, equality, equality.’ When the South seceded, seven states in a little under a week and a half, with four more states over the next three months, Lincoln told them what they wanted to hear to keep them from joining the other 11 states. If that had happened, the war would have been over and the world would have been changed. The world we know today would not be the world that we know. You would need a passport to go from New York to West Virginia. But he developed a reputation among his critics. It seemed for a while that everyone was a critic of his being a prevaricator, or of being a closet racist, which was not true at all.

*Each film has its own unique challenges but are you able to compare the difficulty of making Lincoln with any of your other films?*

It is not my job to compare my movies. I don’t like to compare my films with other movies because I don’t really have that perspective. It is an intellectual exercise but it doesn’t intuitively come to me. I can’t compare it to 'Schindler’s' or to 'Ryan'. I can’t compare it to 'Jaws' or 'E.T.' and I just know that that is who I am at this time in my life. I couldn’t have guessed that I would be telling a story about Abraham Lincoln 30 years ago, but I didn’t know I would be making 'E.T.' ten years before that.

*'The war had to go,' explains Spielberg of telling the story of Lincoln*

*What did you take from the experience of making the film?*

I guess it just confirmed my deep love of history and the fact that I am a patriot and that I have a love for this country. I have expressed that in other movies but it was something that I really tried to express in this one. A respect for the fact that democracy works and the machinery of the democratic process is really no different today than it was 150 years ago. I wanted to point that out. We have a fourth branch of government now called the media. We didn’t have that then but there was no less checking and balancing. What went on up there on the Hill is similar in a way to what we all witness happening today on cable and satellite news.

*Daniel Day-Lewis said no to a Lincoln project you had around a decade go. How did you go about persuading him that this was the movie to do?*

I was having dinner with Leonardo DiCaprio who is a family friend of myself and my wife and he was over at our house and said, ‘What is happening with Lincoln?’ And I told him the whole story with Daniel, about how he had turned me down many years ago. He did so in his inimitable, gentlemanly fashion saying no in a beautifully handwritten letter. And Leo just listened. And the next day Leo called me in the office and gave me Daniel’s cell phone number. Leo had called Daniel and said, ‘You have just got to talk to this guy.’ And that’s what started it rolling.

*Lincoln had a tough upbringing and also had difficulties with his father; is that right?*

He had a tough upbringing because he and his father had a strained relationship and he moved around a lot. Remember, he was born in Springfield, Illinois, and he lived in Kentucky, Indiana, and then when he became a lawyer he was always on the legal circuit, which was a lot of riding horses and going from place to place. You don’t have a law office where your clients come to you; you go out into the world to try and earn a living and try to help them with their problems.

*Sally Field plays Mary, Mrs Lincoln - with a surplus of ambition that Lincoln lacked*

He had his heart broken before he met Mary and probably that part of his heart never healed. That was his one true love but Mary saw the next president of the United States when she first danced with him. She could have gone out with Stephen Douglas [the Democratic Party nominee for President in the 1860 election who lost to Lincoln]. She had a choice. She could either marry Stephen Douglas or Abraham Lincoln but she knew that Lincoln was destined to be the 16th president. So Mary was Lincoln’s ambition. He didn’t have a lot of personal ambition but what he lacked Mary had a surplus of.

*You must have been delighted with the Mary character in the script and also with Sally Field’s portrayal of her, because it would have been easy to make her a sketch?*

Yes, very easy to make her a sketch and she has had so many unpleasant things written about her. They are unfair and very unpleasant. Sally is a force of nature as an actor and I knew Sally would create an unforgettable Mary and not shy away from the fact that Mary was always standing on the edge of her own cliff.

*You work so hard, Steven. What’s the longest period you have gone without directing?*

Three years. I had a couple of times I have had three years. I was still working though. I was developing scripts and I was working on TV shows but I wasn’t physically directing. I think there was three years from 1994 to 1997 and then I did the sequel to 'Jurassic Park', 'The Lost World'. In that period I directed three films in one year, 'The Lost World', 'Amistad' and 'Saving Private Ryan'. I shot all three films inside a one-year period just like the old directors used to do. And then I was so exhausted after doing that, that I took three years off. So I have had two stretches of three years.

*Going back to directing afterwards, is it easy, just like riding a bike, or does even Steven Spielberg feel a bit wobbly?*

It is a bit wobbly. It is not like riding a bike at all. Maybe I should go to film school and get a primer before I spend the studio’s money. I am joking, of course, because all of this is part of my DNA now, but it was a bit wobbly the first couple of weeks back after three years of not directing, that’s for certain.

Asunder by Chloe Aridjis: More interested in being than becoming

Asunder communicates its ideas, and their supporting cultural references, subtly and efficiently.

The second novel by London-based author Chloe Aridjis, Asunder appears on its surface to be about quiet contemplation, and how far it is possible to abstract oneself from the dramas and traumas of social interaction. Claiming not to suffer from listlessness or boredom, protagonist Marie has sought out a job (but not a career) as a museum guard at the National Gallery, working there as "I have always been more interested in being than becoming", killing time by trying to guess how long remains before closing without looking at her watch, or ruminating upon the gradual process of paint cracking.

After nine uneventful years, Marie becomes restless. The sad, quiet death of a 68-year-old colleague, felled by a heart attack at work, jolts her into realising that life is slowly slipping away from her. Her friendship with poet Daniel, fired from the Gallery for noisily pacing around, encourages her to think about his unrequited loves and her own brief liaisons "that didn’t threaten the peace", but when he offers to take her to Paris, she struggles with the potential short-term change to her routine, deliberating for days before taking the trip which irrevocably alters her carefully contained world.

"Painters create order from disorder, but the moment that order has been created, the slow march towards disorder begins again", reflects Marie, and her greatest fear, it seems, is of encounters that will change her situation in any way. Like her, Daniel keeps people at a distance, writing to other poets across the world, preferring not to meet them as this always leads to the correspondence shrivelling; Marie wrote to a prisoner who later escaped from Belmarsh, the realisation that he had her address leading her to panic that he would enter her life in a ruinous fashion (as in Robert Hamer’s It Always Rains on Sunday, about a Bethnal Green housewife whose life is torn apart by this very occurrence). This does not happen, and Marie wonders what became of her penfriend: finally, in Paris, she reaches the uncharacteristic yet inevitable point where she spontaneously breaks out of herself and struggles to connect with an inscrutable stranger.

At its core, Asunder is about time: how slowly it passes, the futility of trying to fight its effects, and generational changes in people and ideas. Besides her memories of vanished shops and her knowledge of different approaches to the restoration of art, Marie often thinks about the history of violence against the suffragettes, as well as her great-grandfather Ted, and the most significant moment of his life as a National Gallery guard, in 1914, when he slipped in trying to catch Mary Richardson, granting her vital seconds to slash Velazquez’s Rokeby Venus in protest against Emmeline Pankhurst’s imprisonment. As a child, Marie heard this story countless times, aware that she was supposed to see Richardson as a criminal but sympathising with her cause, touchingly confessing that "I loved [Ted] just a tiny bit more for not reaching her in time".

Asunder communicates its ideas, and their supporting cultural references, subtly and efficiently. Aridjis is particularly strong on the nature of travel, in London and in general. Her prose is full of deft imagery – such as the way the women "comb the city from [their] hair" on changing into their Gallery uniform – and the moment where Marie becomes aware that she has become "captive to that irrational behaviour in foreign cities when you feel everyone is watching when in reality not a soul has noticed your existence" is especially touching.

The influence of nouveau roman authors such as Marguerite Duras and Nathalie Sarraute, and British counterparts Ann Quin and Christine-Brooke-Rose can be felt in the rarefied focus on the narrator’s interior world, her corresponding observations of the mundane realities of so much human behaviour, and the way in which her narrative slowly builds towards a climax that changes her life without feeling life-changing. As a reminder that life will pass you by if you choose to experience it passively, however, Asunder is far more powerful than it immediately seems. Reported by New Statesman 3 hours ago.
