Locals Earn Spots on District 1 Team Patch Easley, SC --

The young men representing District 1 in the Big League World Series have been announced, and several players from the Easley, Pickens and Wren areas are among them.

The players were announced yesterday at the J.B. “Red” Owens Recreation Complex in Easley.

The theme of this year's team is “Take the Title.”

The District 1 team has won the championship four times and appeared in the final last year, District 1 Administrator Tommy Keef said.

“This'll be our thirteenth year,” he said. “We've won four World Series Championships right here with this host team in the last 12 years. It's the some of the finest talent in South Carolina, some of the finest talent in the United States. We're the only host team that's ever won a World Series out of about 77 years of history with Little League.

“Thirteen's my lucky number,” Keef continued. “I've got a feeling that 2013, we'll have another ring at the championship and keep the tradition going.”

The District One Host Team players are

*Zach Biggers, 16, Walhalla High School*

*Taylor Cothran, 17, T.L. Hanna High School*

*Jake Crawford, 16, Belton Honea Path High School*

*Matthew Eubanks, 17, Pickens High School*

*Will Hartsell, 18, Easley High School*

*Adam Hill, 18, T.L. Hanna High School*

*Brandon Hood, 17, Easley High School*

*Robert Kosch, 17, Daniel High School*

*Brice Maready, 17, Easley High School*

*Max McDouglad, 18, T.L.Hanna High School*

*Stephen McKnight, 18, Anderson University*

*David Medlin, 16, Walhalla High School*

*Daniel Nations, 18, Newberry College*

*Will Porter, 17, Easley High School*

*Javy Taylor, 18, N. Greenville High School*

*L.T. Tolbert, 16, Wren High School*

*Casey Woody, 16, Easley High School*

Gregg Powell will manage the team and Bobby Youngblood and Todd Freeman will coach.

Powell said players have to play 8 of the 12 qualifying games to earn a spot on the District 1 Team.

“After that's completed, we watch them in high school,” Powell said. “The coaching staff, we sit together the first of June and we select it. It's a tough decision. We pick from 15 high schools. That's a tough decision when we sit down and try to pick 17 out of 68.”

The 15 high schools are from District 1.

“The history is really big with some of these players, Taylor Harbin, Zach Brown, Joey Pankake, Brad Chalk, you just keep naming them on and on and on,” Powell said. “We've got some rich history. The program has been really strong throughout most of the time it's been here. I think the history's here and gives them a kind of a barometer to move up to college. We get them prepared to see what they're going to see when they move on to college baseball.”

The 2013 Big League World Series will be held July 24 – July 31. The championship game will be played 8pm July 31 and will be broadcast live on ESPN.

“We're planning on being there,” Powell said.

Legislation Requires Hospitals to Transport Critically Ill Patients Patch Wayne, NJ --

Governor Christie signed legislation Thursday requiring hospital to have protocols to immediately transfer critically ill patients to other facilities for better treatment.

State Senator Kevin O’Toole (District 40) sponsored the legislation.

Hospitals must use their Specialty Care Transportation Units to pick up and transfer patients to other facilities. They are also required to have contingency transport procedures in place if a SCTU is not immediately available.

Hospitals that violate the legislation are subject to a $5,000 penalty and having their state license revoked.

“People suffer enough trauma and anxiety when they or loved ones are critically ill,” O’Toole concluded. “They need to know their caregivers have their best interests at heart and the necessary protocols are in place to transport them to a facility that can better accommodate their needs.”

New Pines Lake Elementary Principal Appointed Patch Wayne, NJ --

A new principal of Pines Lake Elementary School has been appointed for the 2013-14 school year.

The Board of Education appointed Jose Blankely-Celis at its June 6 meeting. He will replace Pamela Longo.

Blankely-Cela has a master’s degree from Northeastern University. He will earn more than $131,000 for the year. Longo earned more than $152,000 annually.

Blankely-Celis will begin working Aug. 13.

The Board approved Longo’s retirement in April.

Longo is not ending her 42-year career on a high note. Residents have criticized the way she responded to incidents of abuse by a substitute teacher to two young Pines Lake students. The abuse reportedly occurred in March but was not made public until a few weeks ago.

Three other Wayne principals are retiring this year: Laura Russomano, Kenneth Kaplan, and Robert Reis.

Grimsby mosque was allegedly firebombed four times

Grimsby mosque was allegedly firebombed four times This is Grimsby --

A THIRD man has been remanded in custody charged in connection with the fire-bombing of a mosque in Grimsby.

Daniel Cressey, 24, is the cousin of one of the other two men who are already in custody and due to appear at crown court.

Cressey appeared at Grimsby Magistrates' Court charged with arson with intent to endanger the lives of others on May 26 following the incident at Grimsby Islamic Culture Centre, in Weelsby Road, Grimsby.

Cressey, a docks driver, wept when relatives, in tears, were allowed to approach the dock during a brief adjournment.

They spoke words of reassurance to him, telling him that they loved him and his family were there for him.

Cressey wore a checked shirt and confirmed his details when asked by the court clerk.

No plea was entered at the hearing yesterday and the case was adjourned to Friday.

Prosecuting, Manisha Singh said the case will be sent to Grimsby Crown Court and Cressey, of Manchester Square, New Holland, is due to appear there on Friday morning.

The prosecutor described the offence as racially aggravated.

She told the court that the mosque, at the junction of Weelsby Road and Legsby Avenue, Grimsby, had been allegedly firebombed four times – "one after the other".

The prosecutor said the lights to the mosque were on at the time of the attack and there were cars in the car park.

She said people were at prayer and others, including children, were involved in activities in the mosque.

Miss Singh told the court the mosque had been targeted just a few days earlier in a separate attack when windows were smashed.

Representing Cressey, solicitor Roy Foreman said his client was qualified as a welder fabricator, but worked as a driver for New Holland Bulk Services on the docks of the port. He earns around £30,000 a year, the court heard.

Mr Foreman said Cressey lived with his mother, who was in court, accompanied by Cressey's father and stepmother.

Mr Foreman applied for bail for his client, but this was refused by District Judge Daniel Curtis, who ordered Cressey to appear at Grimsby Crown Court on Friday.

The judge said: "I can't recall in all my time here dealing with a case of this sort."

Two Grimsby men Stuart Harness, 33, and Gavin Humphries, 37, both of Dixon Avenue, have already appeared at crown court charged with arson with intent to endanger the lives of others on May 26 at the mosque.

Harness was born in New Holland and had served in the Army for 13 years, including in Iraq, Kosovo and Northern Ireland.

Humphries, a father-of-two, has served in the army but is now unemployed.

Their cases have been adjourned for a plea and casement hearing on August 30 at Grimsby Crown Court. Reported by This is 10 hours ago.

Third Point hedge fund urges Japanese company to create an independent board to run partially spun-off entertainment arm

New York-based hedge fund Third Point said it has raised its stake in Sony and urged the Japanese company to create an independent board to run a partially spun-off entertainment arm with Sony's chief executive, Kazuo Hirai, as its chairman.

Third Point, a $13bn (£8.3bn) hedge fund founded by billionaire investor Daniel Loeb, last month proposed that the struggling electronics maker conduct an initial public offering for its profitable music and movie business. It said such a move could boost Sony's share price by as much as 60%.

In a second letter to Hirai on Tuesday, in which he again offered to put a Third Point representative on Sony's board, Loeb added to his proposal by suggesting that Sony adopt "a semi-independent governance structure". Loeb argues that the electronics maker has failed to find the synergies that the shift into entertainment had promised when it bought Columbia Pictures 24 years ago.

Loeb again urged "brisk change" at Sony amid the backdrop of economic changes being wrought by Japan's prime minister that are aimed at ending years of deflation and call for leaner and more agile corporate governance.

"A choice to separate the entertainment unit could be a reasonable idea. Sony may have to make a decision whether to keep the business or to sell off," said Tetsuro Ii, president of Commons Asset Management in Tokyo. "I feel this kind of move is a positive move for the entire Japanese share market."

Sony shares closed up 4.4%, outperforming the benchmark Nikkei average, which was flat. They have more than doubled since the start of the year and hit a two-year intraday high on 22 May.

Sony reiterated that its board would give appropriate consideration to Third Point's spin-off proposal, but declined to comment on the latest letter, which came two days before Sony hosts its annual shareholders meeting in Tokyo.

Third Point said it had increased its stake in Sony to 70m shares, or about 7%, valued at $1.4bn. That was up from 64m shares previously, adding pressure on Hirai and his board to take notice of its largest shareholder.

Loeb also welcomed Sony's reported decision to retain financial advisers to help it assess Third Point's proposal. Sony has hired Morgan Stanley and Citigroup to help it look at options for its entertainment business, cable television network CNBC reported in May. Sony declined comment on the report.

The challenge that Hirai faces in reviving Sony's electronics business was highlighted last month when the company scaled down its sales targets for digital cameras and smartphones for the year ending March 2015 by 13-17% and shrank its operating profit margin goals for its gaming business.

Third Point said it now has 46m ordinary shares of Sony valued at $944m and 24m shares valued at $492m through cash-settled swaps. Reported by guardian.co.uk 11 hours ago.

Shared Media Unveils 2TB Cloud Storage Service Shared.com

As consumer cloud storage moves towards the mainstream, a four person startup in San Francisco is focused on improving personal file storage with a "less-is-more" approach.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (PRWEB) June 18, 2013

Shared Media, (https://www.shared.com) today announced the open beta of the company’s new cloud storage service, Shared.com.

Question: How many songs can be stored with 2 terabytes of storage?

Answer: Approximately 400,000.

That’s a lot of music and Shared.com offers a place to put all your files.

As data consumption continues to grow from the rise of HD video, faster Internet and media capture devices, individuals are creating more and more digital content. In addition many consumers are outgrowing the total storage capacity of their multiple devices. There is less space for important documents or photos and those who need more are jumping to cloud storage services.

With the emergence of consumer products such as Google Glass, the popular line of GoPro cameras and wearable technology accessories, the growing need for additional personal file storage is apparent.

Cloud Storage Usage

Shared predicts consumer need for storage will increase by 700-800 percent over the next few years.

Large companies such as Google Drive, Microsoft Skydrive, Dropbox and others have leveraged data storage into a viable and rapid growth business. With the potential upcoming IPO’s of two rival companies, cloud storage could gain much more visibility in the not-too-distant future.

“As the quality and volume of content increases, cloud storage is moving incredibly fast towards the mainstream,” says Adam Oliver, Chief Executive Officer of Shared Media. “A recent report by Strategy Analytics stated that nearly 55% of connected Americans have never used cloud storage. We think our free service is a great option for anyone looking for online file storage and if additional space is needed, we offer that too.”

Fewer Bells and Whistles

“Our goal is to strip away anything that decreases productivity and to focus on key elements. The first is how do we improve the overall user experience? The second is providing a secure system to upload quickly and the third is ease-of-use. Ultimately it comes down to creating a service that is intuitive, secure, fast and simple,” says Oliver, “We are growing this towards the consumer.”

About Shared Media

Based in San Francisco, Shared Media is a privately held network of media hosting sites providing utility based services for data and content storage.

Exclusive “Tanquinho” Interview and Match Breakdown - IBJJF Worlds 2013, Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes vs. Rafael Mendes

Jiu Jitsu analyst Dan Faggella interviews featherweight black belt BJJ world champion August “Tanquinho” Mendes about his recent win over Rafael Mendes - and breaks down the most interesting transitions that made the difference in this match. Hear Tanquinho’s thoughts on match strategy, and more.

Long Beach, CA (PRWEB) June 18, 2013

Fans and practitioners of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu were as excited as they’d ever been for the 2013 BJJ World Championships, held in Long Beach, CA from June 1st to June 3rd. What the crowds probably weren’t ready for, was the number of upsets in the finals of the black belt divisions this year.

At featherweight, Rafael Mendes (Team Atos) stands above the competition as the most dominant featherweight grappler alive. His titles at the World Championship and the ADCC (the world’s most prestigious submission grappling competition) put him in a place of dominance. When he met Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes (same last name, no relation) in the finals of the World Championship the last time, the victory ended up in the hands of Rafael - the expected winner. This year’s “Tanquinho vs Rafael Mendes” featherweight finals match was expected to yield a similar result.

This year, the match began with a quick 2 points being scored by Tanquinho which surprised almost everyone in the stadium - and especially Rafael Mendes. Down by 2, Rafael’s ensuing onslaught of sweep and back-take attempts continued for about 4 minutes until he was able to set up his “Berimbolo” back take transition (this transition is broken down in the full match breakdown in the MicroBJJ YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiAqE9a2J0M). Rolling underneath Tanquinho until nearly on his back, Rafael’s legs fell just out of position and Tanquinho was able to avoid the back take and transition to land Rafael in the 50-50 guard - another position which Rafael is known for.

The last minute of the match proved to be one of the most exciting. Rafael maintained top position in the 50-50 guard, aiming to keep Tanquinho down for the remainder of the match, but Tanquinho was able to secure an escape and reversal in the last seconds of the match (See the full match analysis - including a breakdown of most important techniques and transitions at: http://scienceofskill.com/tanquinho-vs-rafael-mendes-2013-worlds-breakdown-exclusive-tanquinho-interview/#).

Recently, Jiu Jitsu Analyst Daniel Faggella interviewed Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes about his preparation and experience of facing off against Rafael at this year’s world championships. Tanquinho opens the conversation about the Rafael match with the following statement:

“I lost to him in the 2011 Worlds, but, after that fight - I made a strategy to fight him again.”

Apparently, in their 2011 match, Rafael had stealthily been able to pull guard on Tanquinho a number of times early in the match by reaching for the collar and sitting quickly to the bottom position. Tanquinho mentioned that he knew he’d want to alter his strategy, and so he decided that he would shoot for a double leg from far enough away to prevent Rafael’s guard pull. In this instance, the strategy worked!

Tanquinnho also comments on the final 50-50 guard scramble where he found himself in the last minute of the match with Rafael:

“I fought all of my matches with a knee brace... and so I really felt my knee in that position... but I couldn’t do NOTHING... it was either see the doctor or lose the fight.”

The injury makes the last 30 seconds match all that much more painful - but at Tanquinho’s torqued leg is being extracted from the 50-50 guard, he is able to cut behind Rafael and find himself behind in a clinch.

The match ends, and Tanquinho’s hand is risen as the victor. Later on in the interview Tanquinho talks more about his approaches to strategy, but it’s clear that at least in this instance, his approach was the right one.

The author has created a revolutionary study program for beginning to intermediate students of French, guiding them through the maze of verb conjugation. This new book, released by Dog Ear Publishing, will have students mastering the art of conjugating the French verb in no time.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) June 18, 2013

Learning a language requires patience, determination, practice and study. This new book by a teacher with more than four decades of experience focuses on helping students learn the ins and outs of French verbs in all 14 tenses plus the imperative. The only one of its kind, this hands-on, organizational, systematic learning tool guides students from junior high school through adults through the complicated mechanics of verb conjugation, allowing them to create their own life-long reference sheets along the way.

“The French Verb Chart: Workbook I” includes a chart with all 14 French verb tenses plus the imperative with English equivalents, representative verbs fully conjugated and charts of 68 common irregular elementary to intermediate level verbs. As designed by author Daniel R. Weidman and used in his classrooms over the decades, students use one French verb chart per verb (infinitive), and each contains a place to record the French infinitive with its English meaning, the conjugated verb forms for each personal pronoun, and the English meanings for that particular tense. The logic of the French Verb Chart learning system is the unique up-down, top box-bottom box pairing methodology that helps students visualize and picture the conjugations, thereby enabling them to commit them to memory and to recall them faster.

This highly effective educational tool can be incorporated into an independent study program or blended with a teacher-led curriculum. This first workbook in Weidman’s French Verb Chart program features materials for beginning to intermediate students while “Workbook II” will focus on material for intermediate to advanced students. As a bonus feature, each workbook also contains 25 blank verb charts that teachers and students can use for quizzes, tests, homework or review. Unlike other French verb books on the market, The French Verb Chart learning system gives students “a sense of ownership and accomplishment.”

Daniel Wagner: Greece's Dilemma: Too Much Austerity and Too Many Demons

$
0
0
The Greek government's closure of the national television and radio network last week marked the end of state-run television in Greece for the first time since 1974, when the country became a functional democracy. It also serves to symbolize that the government finally appears to realize it has produced too many demons, and that the time has come to address them head on.

Greece continues to operate under a client-based political system that nurtures a nepotistic and bloated bureaucracy -- even after five years of crisis and cutbacks. The influence of powerful and partisan trade unions, combined with the manner in which government organizations have been run for the past 30+ years, have contributed greatly to the image of a weak political system unwilling and unable to correct the mistakes of the past.

The closure of the ERT network prompted fierce reaction not only by opposition political parties and the majority of the public sector employees and unions, but also by two of the three parties comprising the tripartite government. As this was a unilateral decision made by the New Democracy (ND) party through Prime Minister Samaras, the fragile governing coalition now faces a potentially serious crisis -- it could fall if the other coalition members choose not to support ND on this issue.

Under the terms of a cost cutting guideline agreed by the government, a total of 180,000 public sector employees must be made redundant by the end of 2015. This includes pending retirees as well as several thousand awaiting decisions from disciplinary committees. It is under this framework that some 2,700 ERT employees were let go at the same time that the government announced it has plans to hire up to 800 employees through a new entity that is to be created in place of ERT.

Although recognizing the unique cultural contribution the ERT has made in the fields of television, cinema, radio and visual arts, as well as some quality educational programs that would not otherwise be available, many Greeks also see the ERT as synonymous with everything that was wrong with the post-1974 Greek political and social reality. It would be unfortunate if the coalition government fell as a result of trying to do the right thing, particularly as Greece remains under tremendous pressure to raise revenues to pay its bills and send a message to Europe, and the world, that it is capable of lifting itself out of the abyss it helped to create.

As agreed by the Troika, the government is attempting to generate more than 2.5 billion euros in revenue through privatizations this year -- part of a larger plan to generate 25 billion euros by 2020. However, the lack of confidence in the Greek economy on the part of foreign investors has greatly complicated the government's ability to raise capital.

As an indication of the difficulty it is having, the government recently requested a postponement of this year's target to sometime in 2014. The failure to complete the DEPA/Gazprom deal that would have contributed some one billion euros to the economy puts the government well behind its target. Moody's characterized the ERT and Gazprom situation as "credit negative" events.

If it is to survive, the government must enhance its ability to reach the agreed targets within the Troika's time frame -- but it is running out of time. If the government has failed to reach the targets by next year -- and doing so will naturally further impact the financial well-being of companies and individuals alike with more austerity measures -- the tripartite government is likely to fall under increasing pressure from the leftist Syriza coalition.

All current opinion polls suggest that the two parties are tied, with a slight advantage to ND. Should ND's efforts fail, Syriza is expected to win the next election. But unless there is a reshuffling of the current composition of political parties, Syriza will find it difficult to identify political allies that could agree on an alternative agenda that stands a chance of being popular -- and succeeding. This would be made all the more difficult given Syriza's desire to void the legislation underlaying ND's actions and instead pursue a different agenda -- without leaving the Eurozone.

A leftist, Syriza-led government would also seriously curtail the privatization process, increase taxation on high-earning individuals and companies, and likely make the difficult investment climate even more challenging through the introduction of business unfriendly regulations. Not exactly what Greece needs.

The European political establishment would clearly like to see the current government succeed, for obvious reasons, but this is becoming increasingly unlikely. Greece's unfortunate recent political history will probably adopt a familiar pattern in the near term, with one failed government giving way to another failed government-in-waiting.

It is unclear what formula would permit the Greek people and its government to help them help themselves. Austerity hasn't worked, but neither has rejection of austerity. Expect more of the same.
